Ian Brown is a Visiting Professor at the University of Chester's School of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on prehistoric and medieval archaeology, particularly hillforts and landscape archaeology in England, Wales, and the Isle of Man. He has authored over 40 academic works including the 2021 book Beacons in the Landscape: The Hillforts of England, Wales and the Isle of Man. Currently directs the Ravensburgh Castle Hillfort Project in Hertfordshire and investigates a newly discovered defended enclosure in Denbighshire.

- Former AHRC-funded 'Atlas of the Hillforts of Britain and Ireland' project contributor (2012-2016)
- Member of Oxford University's Institute of Archaeology as Honorary Research Associate

- Viking connections in Manx archaeology
- Nineteenth-century maritime archaeology
Active in collaborative projects with multiple stakeholders, including government heritage agencies and conservation organizations.
