Professor Ian Bousfield is a renowned trombonist, conductor, and pedagogue. He holds positions as Professor of Trombone at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern, Switzerland, and the Royal Academy of Music in London, and serves as an International Fellow of Brass at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. His career spans over three decades, including roles as Principal Trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra.
Education includes early training with his father and Dudley Bright, followed by studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the European Youth Orchestra. Bousfield’s research interests focus on brass performance, orchestral conducting, and music pedagogy, reflected in his book Unlocking the Trombone Code and his global teaching influence.
He has conducted orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic and Danish Radio Symphony, and his awards include the ITA Lifetime Achievement Award (2012) and Chevalier de Tastevin (2017). Bousfield’s advising and coaching span prestigious institutions like the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and New World Symphony. He maintains active roles in brass ensembles and has recorded with major labels including EMI and Chandos.
