Ian Bogost is a Professor of Computer Science & Engineering and Director of Film & Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis, with a secondary appointment in the McKelvey School of Engineering. He holds the Barbara and David Thomas Distinguished Professorship and previously served as the Ivan Allen College Distinguished Chair in Media Studies at Georgia Tech. His expertise spans media studies, game design, and philosophy, blending critical analysis with practical creation. Bogost’s interdisciplinary work bridges technical systems and humanistic inquiry, addressing topics like video games, digital media, and societal issues through both scholarship and game development.
Education: PhD in Comparative Literature (UCLA, 2004), MA in Comparative Literature (UCLA, 2001), BA in Philosophy & Comparative Literature (USC, 1998). His research emphasizes media’s dual role as critique and practice, exemplified by games exploring airport security, consumer debt, and the petroleum industry. These works have been exhibited globally, including at the Smithsonian and SF MoMA.
He is a contributing editor at The Atlantic, co-editor of the Platform Studies and Object Lessons series, and founder of Persuasive Games LLC. Awards include fellowships and recognitions for his contributions to media studies and game design. Bogost’s academic roles include affiliations with multiple research centers and adjunct positions, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and public-facing scholarship.
