Ian Bartol is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University, where he leads the Bartol Marine Biomechanics Lab. His research focuses on marine biomechanics and physiological ecology, particularly locomotion and sensory processes in cephalopods and sea turtles.

Research Interests span hydrodynamic analysis of aquatic locomotion, sensory ecology in marine vertebrates, and bio-inspired engineering. Key projects include studying vortex ring formation in squid, hearing capabilities in loggerhead turtles, and stability mechanisms in boxfishes.
Grants & Collaborations include Federal funding for cephalopod maneuverability (2016-2020), Private projects on sea turtle swimming (2014-2017), and State-funded studies on archived samples (2009-2011). His work integrates DPIV/DDPTV flow imaging with kinematic analysis.

Labs & Teams utilize advanced 2D/3D flow imaging in a water tunnel/viewing chamber, synchronized with high-speed cameras to analyze thrust production, turning mechanics, and predator-prey interactions. The lab recently highlighted Alissa Ganley's defended dissertation (2021) and welcomed new members like Morgan (2024).
