Christopher D. Marshall is a Regents Professor in the Department of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston. His research integrates functional morphology, ecology, and physiology to understand vertebrate feeding mechanisms and sensory adaptations in marine environments. He holds a Ph.D. in Functional Morphology from the University of Florida (1997), an M.S. in Marine Biology from Nova Southeastern University (1992), and a B.S. in Biology from Virginia Tech (1990).
His research focuses on the functional ecology of marine vertebrates, including sensory systems (e.g., vibrissae in pinnipeds), feeding biomechanics (e.g., sea turtles, sharks), and evolutionary adaptations. Key themes include the interplay between morphology, behavior, and environmental interactions. Recent work explores tactile perception in marine mammals and durophagous adaptations in sea turtles.
Marshall’s publications span over 78 peer-reviewed articles, with contributions to understanding pinniped vibrissal innervation, dugong ecology, and shark sensory systems. His lab, the Ecomorphology & Comparative Physiology Lab, emphasizes integrative approaches using dissection, histology, kinematics, and electrophysiological techniques.
