Ian Alwayn

Prof. Ian Alwayn is a Professor of Transplant Surgery at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), serving as Head of the Transplant Surgery Subdepartment and Chairman of the LUMC Transplant Center's management team. He specializes in organ transplantation, particularly liver and multi-organ transplants, with research focusing on improving organ viability through ex-vivo perfusion and regenerative medicine. His career includes training at Erasmus MC (Rotterdam) and leadership roles in Canada's Atlantic Multi-Organ Transplant Program before returning to Leiden in 2017.

Education: Studied medicine at Leiden University, completed surgical training at Erasmus MC, and held international positions in Paris and Boston. Research interests include immunological tolerance, vascular regeneration, and optimizing donor organ use. Grants received from Dutch Kidney Foundation, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and others.
