Iain Samson is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Windsor, affiliated with the School of the Environment. His research focuses on economic geology, particularly the formation of rare earth element (REE), Nb-Zr-Be, and platinum group element (PGE) deposits, with expertise in fluid inclusion studies, isotope geochemistry, and hydrothermal processes. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in China, including teaching at the China University of Geosciences Beijing (CUGB), and contributed to understanding mineralization mechanisms in systems like the Coldwell Complex and Midcontinent Rift.
Dr. Samson has received the prestigious 2021 Duncan Derry Medal for significant contributions to economic geology. His work spans diverse topics such as rare metal pegmatites, magmatic-hydrothermal interactions, and ore genesis in layered intrusions. Key research themes include fluid evolution in mineralizing systems, metasomatism processes, and the application of multi-isotope techniques to unravel deposit formation histories.
His publications emphasize the interplay between magmatic and hydrothermal processes, with notable studies on the Baerzhe REE deposit in China, the Coldwell Complex PGE systems, and the Sudbury Structure fluid architecture. While no student advisees are explicitly listed, his research group likely contributes to training early-career geoscientists through field and analytical studies.
