Hywel Griffiths is a Reader in Physical Geography through the medium of Welsh at Aberystwyth University. His academic journey includes a PhD from Aberystwyth (2006–2009), an MSc in River Basin Dynamics and Management (2005), and a BSc in Physical Geography and Mathematics (2004). He specializes in fluvial processes, environmental change, and the cultural geographies of rivers. His research explores river dynamics, anthropogenic impacts, and the interplay between hydrology and culture, particularly in Wales and Patagonia.
Griffiths has led projects funded by the Joy Welch Trust, British Academy, and RCUK, focusing on sustainable tourism, bedrock erosion, and historical hydrology. He has co-authored over 70 publications, including books on river potholes and geomorphology. His work contributes to UN SDGs related to climate action and sustainable communities. Awards include the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales Gold Award (2017) and Adnodd Cyfrwng Cymraeg (2020) for Welsh-medium academic support.
