Hyun Ok Park is a Professor of Sociology at York University, affiliated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. Her research focuses on global capitalism, postcolonialism, and transnational Korean studies, with a particular emphasis on labor, diaspora, and historical memory. She has held prestigious fellowships including the MacArthur Foundation and ACLS grants, and currently directs the Korean Office for Research and Education funded by a $1.1M Core University Program grant (2018–2023).
Education: Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Research Interests: Park explores the intersections of modernity, capitalism, and postcolonialism through case studies of Korea, its diaspora, and Cold War histories. Her work challenges conventional narratives of nation-state formation and unification, emphasizing transnational capital flows and marginalized voices. Recent projects include studies on Korean Chinese women in northeast China and stateless Koreans in Japan, reframing local histories as global Cold War dynamics.
