Hyrum D. Carroll is an Associate Professor in the TSYS School of Computer Science at Columbus State University, Columbus, Georgia. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Brigham Young University under Dr. Mark J. Clement, focusing on multiple sequence alignment, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) developing sequence alignment algorithms. Prior to Columbus State, he taught at Middle Tennessee State University.
Education
- PhD in Computer Science, Brigham Young University
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Research Interests: Dr. Carroll's work spans bioinformatics—including database retrieval metrics, pairwise/multiple sequence alignment, phylogeny search, and biological networks—and computer science education. His recent focus centers on autograders (automatic assessment systems) and initiatives to democratize computer science education. This dual expertise bridges algorithmic biology with pedagogical innovation in computing curricula.
Teaching & Service: He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including Algorithms, Computer Science 1/2, Data Structures, and Database Management Systems. His Fall 2025 schedule features CPSC 1302K (Computer Science 2) and CPSC 4115 (Algorithms). Office hours operate via online drop-ins Mondays–Wednesdays 12–1 PM and 2–3 PM, with appointments available through drcarroll.youcanbook.me.
