Hylke Melsert is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Healthcare (IVG) at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. He has been involved as a lecturer in the Advanced Nursing Practice master's program since 2017, which trains Nurse Specialists in the Netherlands. In March 2024, he joined the Education Quality and Leadership Expertise Group, where he researches how education quality and management practices contribute to student academic success.
His educational background includes:
- First-degree teacher training from Maastricht University
- 'Educational Science' training by Kessels & Smit
- Master in Educational Science & Technology from University of Twente
- SKE qualification
Hylke's research interests focus on nursing education innovation, curriculum development, and the relationship between healthcare organization structures and patient aggression. As a former nurse, he brings clinical expertise to his educational roles, particularly examining whether healthcare organization models influence patient aggression through his teaching in the 'Violence against Healthcare Professionals' minor program.
He serves as a study career coach and supervises master's thesis students in the Advanced Nursing Practice program. Together with a colleague, he coordinates the 'Professional Development' curriculum, focusing on development and performance reviews. His expertise in educational science enables him to contribute significantly to curriculum innovation across the institute.
Prior to his current role, Hylke served as chair of the IVG examination committee until September 2023. His career trajectory shows a movement from clinical nursing practice to specialized educational roles with increasing focus on educational leadership and quality assurance in higher education settings.
