Hyeju Jang is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University Indianapolis, and an affiliate professor at the University of British Columbia’s Department of Computer Science. Her research focuses on computational modeling of language use, integrating machine learning and NLP to address challenges in healthcare, education, and social media analysis. She holds a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University’s Language Technologies Institute, followed by postdoctoral work at UBC and the BC Centre for Disease Control.
Her education includes a Ph.D. in Language Technologies (Carnegie Mellon University, 2017), and prior postdoctoral research in health systems impact at UBC. Her work bridges computer science with linguistics and psychology, emphasizing interdisciplinary applications.
Research interests include NLP for healthcare communication, Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis via multimodal data (eye-tracking, speech), logical reasoning in LLMs, and public sentiment analysis on topics like vaccination and AI adoption. Her recent work explores large language models for clinical intervention planning and hallucination detection.
Publications span topics like Alzheimer’s classification using gaze data, sentiment analysis of public health discourse, and multimodal fusion for medical diagnosis. She actively collaborates with institutions like the BC CDC and the Rwanda Health System. Her work has been published in venues such as PLOS Digital Health, NAACL, and IEEE journals.
