Hye-Sook Wang is an Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at Brown University. She holds a PhD in English Language and Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1993), an MA from Sogang University (1984), and a BA from Duksung Women's University (1982). Her research focuses on sociolinguistics, cross-cultural communication, applied linguistics (Korean as a second/foreign language), and gender differences in language learning. She actively develops language teaching materials and integrates cultural studies into language education.
Teaching responsibilities include Korean language courses at all levels, Korean Culture and Film, and courses on Language, Culture, and Society: Korea. She coordinates Korean Studies programs and study-abroad initiatives in Korea.
Notable scholarly contributions include monographs on Korean language programs in U.S. higher education and cultural readings for language learners. She edited the Korean Language in America journal (2005–2012) as editor-in-chief.
Received the Cultural Merit Medal from the South Korean government (2023) for contributions to language and cultural preservation. Affiliated with organizations like the American Association of Teachers of Korean (AATK) and the International Gender and Language Association (IGALA).
