Dr Huw Bell is a Programme Leader for Postgraduate Programmes and a Reader in Teaching and Learning at Manchester Metropolitan University's Faculty of Health and Education. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics (University of Wales, Swansea, 2002), a BA in History (University of Kent, 1987), and RSA TEFL certifications. His research focuses on grammar pedagogy in UK schools, teacher attitudes, and language acquisition. He leads the Primary Grammar Project, training over 350 teachers and 200 pupils across 40 schools. He is an external examiner at Swansea and Nottingham Trent Universities and has received awards for teaching excellence from Manchester Met's Student Union.
Research interests include primary/secondary grammar teaching, teacher professional development, and curriculum implementation. His work emphasizes practical classroom applications and teacher training. Current PhD supervision areas include vocabulary strategies, mother tongue use in ELT, and supplementary schools. Dr Bell's projects bridge academic research with school partnerships, fostering impactful educational practices.
Professional contributions include roles with BAAL and BERA, and grants supporting teacher CPD programs. His labs/teams include the Primary Grammar Project, which has influenced regional education policies. Future work aims to expand evidence-based grammar teaching frameworks and explore digital pedagogical tools.
