Professor Hulya Dagdeviren is a Professor of International Economic Development at the University of Hertfordshire and Editor-in-Chief of Competition and Change, an interdisciplinary journal focusing on globalization, financialisation, and political economy. Her research bridges economics with social policy, political economy, and economic geography, emphasizing the social consequences of economic policies for marginalized groups.
Her work centers on two key areas: post-2008 crisis dynamics and austerity impacts (e.g., household debt, local government debt resilience) and governance of environmental resources (water, energy, land) regarding access, inequality, and sustainability. She has led major projects like the EU-funded RESCUE initiative (€2.5M) on household resilience across Europe (2014–2017) and a UK-India collaboration on food security (2017–2021). Her advisory roles include Debt Justice International and the UNDP (2003–2010).
Research outputs span interdisciplinary journals such as Journal of Economic Geography and Development and Change. Recent articles address post-pandemic austerity, net-zero financing, and land tenure in South India. Her work highlights systemic inequalities and resilience strategies in crises, blending empirical analysis with policy critique.
