Dr Huiyan Fu is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Essex's Department of Organisation Studies and Human Resource Management within the Essex Business School. Her research focuses on precarious work, social inequalities, and cross-national comparisons in Japan and China. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford.
Key research areas include gendered inequalities in labour markets, cultural dimensions of work, and the intersection of social stratification variables such as age, class, and ethnicity. She has authored three books and numerous journal articles, including Temporary and Gig Economy Workers in China and Japan: The Culture of Unequal Work (Oxford UP, 2023). Her work has been supported by grants from the British Academy, Leverhulme Trust, and Japan Foundation.
Dr Fu teaches Managing Across Cultures and supervises PhD students in areas including Japanese/Chinese Studies, gig economy dynamics, and intersectional inequality research. Her current project examines mental health linkages to social inequality and precarious employment.
