Dr Christina Purcell is a Senior Lecturer at the Business School of Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), specializing in precarious work, climate change and work dynamics, and green industrial relations. She joined MMU in 2016 after completing her PhD there on temporary agency workers in French car manufacturing. Her research bridges labor process theory with contemporary issues like gig economy labor and the just transition to a sustainable economy.
Teaching: She teaches modules such as Power, Politics and Conflict; Social Psychology; and Work and Working Lives. Her supervision focuses on labor process studies, digital platform work, and green skills. Current doctoral supervision topics include gender balance in brass playing and employee experience of location-sharing technology.
Research & Roles: A member of the Decent Work and Productivity Research Centre, she explores how work organization intersects with climate change, including union responses and green job quality. She also serves as Carbon Literacy Champion and Wellbeing and Voice Champion at MMU. Peer-reviewed contributions span journals like Work, Employment and Society and Labour Studies Journal.
Key Themes: Her work critically examines consent, coercion, and resistance in precarious work contexts, and the socio-economic systems shaping production and sustainability goals. Recent presentations include 'Can Labour Save the Planet?' at the Industrial Relations in Europe Conference (2022).
