Dr. Huitong Zhou is a Principal Research Officer at Lincoln University's Department of Agricultural Sciences. He holds honorary professorships at Gansu Agricultural University (since 2009) and Guizhou University (since 2015). His academic credentials include a PhD from Lincoln University, and MAgrSc/BAgrSc degrees from South China Agricultural University.
Dr. Zhou's research centers on animal genetics, with emphasis on sheep genomics, wool science, and livestock breeding improvement. He investigates genetic variations linked to economically significant traits, develops gene-markers for superior breeding stock, and founded the International Wool Research Institute—coordinating scientists from 13 global institutions. His work has been commercialized into gene tests used by over 1,100 breeders across 14 countries.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals dominant themes: keratin gene characterization (KRTAP/KAP families), wool trait associations, and genetic mechanisms underlying fiber quality in Chinese sheep breeds. His studies frequently employ transcriptomics, polymorphism analysis, and genotype-phenotype correlation methodologies.
Scientific Awards:
- PGG Wrightson Seed Ltd Significant Achievement Award
He supervises postgraduate research on genetic determinants of livestock traits, including six completed projects on sheep/cattle genomics. As founder of the International Wool Research Institute, he leads global collaborations advancing wool science.
