Her work bridges architectural practice and academic research with a strong focus on healthcare environments and cross-cultural design.
Her research explores the intersection of culture, human behavior, and the built environment, particularly in healthcare settings. Utilizing advanced analytical methods such as space syntax, discrete event simulation, and behavioral mapping, she conducts post-occupancy evaluations to generate evidence-based design guidelines. Her work is deeply rooted in performance-driven design and aims to improve organizational and patient outcomes through environmental design.
Dr. Cai’s scholarly contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the International Academy Award for Best Research Project, the AIA-AAH/AAH Foundation Burgun Fellowship, the 2021 HCD 10 Healthcare Design Educator honor, and the inaugural Wilbur H (Tib) Tusler, Jr. Health Design Research Prize in 2022. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA), reflecting her leadership in the field.
She actively disseminates her research through academic publications and professional engagement. Her background includes architectural practice and education in China and Singapore, followed by a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
