Hugo Mercier

Hugo Mercier is a CNRS Research Director and co-leader of the Evolution & Social Cognition and Collective Intelligence teams at Institut Jean Nicod. His work develops novel theories of human reasoning and knowledge evaluation.

Research innovations:

• Argumentative theory of reasoning (with Dan Sperber)
• Cognitive mechanisms of epistemic vigilance
• Social functions of reasoning across cultures

His current projects examine how people assess information credibility and combat misinformation, with applications to public understanding of science.

He teaches cognitive science and coordinates research on cultural transmission of epistemic institutions.
