Hugo Merchant is a Full Professor at the Institute of Neurobiology (INB) at UNAM's Juriquilla campus since 2015. Previously served as Professor (2004-2015) and Research Associate (1999-2004) at UNAM and the University of Minnesota respectively. Holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences (1997) from UNAM with postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota's Brain Sciences Center.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Biology, UNAM (1990)
- Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences, UNAM (1993)
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, UNAM (1997)
- Postdoctoral Research, University of Minnesota Brain Sciences Center (1997-1999)
Research Focus: Specializes in systems neurophysiology of primates, motor cortex stimulation, and development of neuroimaging tools. Leads the Laboratory of Systems Neurophysiology in Primates (Lab B15), developing open-source tools like PREEMACS for cortical analysis and ICMS GUI for motor stimulation studies. Current work emphasizes kinematic analysis using DeepLabCut and intracortical stimulation techniques.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Merchant Lab INB-UNAM, collaborating on projects involving primate neurophysiology and neuroengineering solutions. Maintains an active GitHub repository with tools for data processing and analysis.
