Professor Hugo Frey is the Director of Arts and Humanities and Professor of Visual and Cultural History at the University of Chichester. He co-authored The Graphic Novel: An Introduction (CUP, 2015) and co-edited the award-winning The Cambridge History of the Graphic Novel (2018). His research spans graphic novels, French cinema, and nationalism, with a focus on cultural history and visual representation. Frey has held grants from the British Academy and others, and served as a Visiting Professor at University of Gent (2022).
Education: BA Hons (CNAA), MA (Surrey), PhD (Surrey).
Research Interests: Graphic novels, Franco-Belgian comics history, nationalism in cinema, and cultural politics. His work explores intersections between visual media, memory, and historical events. Key projects include editing exhibitions at the Brussels Comics Museum and analyzing 1960s pop culture through comics.
Teaching: Leads modules on political ideology, comics, Brexit, and French cultural history. Known as a Prince's Teaching Institute 'Inspirational Lecturer', supporting early career teachers.
Awards: Recognized for co-editing The Cambridge History of the Graphic Novel, a landmark work in the field.
Public Engagement: Co-supervises research on outsider art, contributes to Holocaust Memorial events, and lectures on topics like D-Day commemorations.
