Hugo Bowles is an Honorary Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Buckingham's Vice-Chancellor's Office. Over 30 years, he has taught English linguistics at four Italian universities and conducted pioneering research in applied linguistics, focusing on legal/medical English, English as a lingua franca, and literary stylistics. His work bridges linguistics and literature, particularly in analyzing Charles Dickens's manuscripts through stenographic techniques.

Research Interests: His current projects include the Dickens Code initiative (winner of the 2022 Times Higher Education Award), which deciphers Dickens's shorthand manuscripts, and editing a new Oxford edition of Pickwick Papers. His work explores the intersection of orality, textual analysis, and Dickens's creative process.
