Professor Hugh Jones serves as Professor of Astronomy within the Centre for Astrophysics Research (CAR) at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science. He has held this position since 2004 and maintains significant international affiliations including Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Queensland and Visiting Professor at Ukraine's National Observatory.
His educational foundation includes:
- BSc in Physics from University of Leeds (1988)
- Exchange MSc from University of Alberta
- PhD from University of Edinburgh (1995) with thesis "The Coolest Dwarfs"
Professor Jones specializes in exoplanet and brown dwarf research with emphasis on spectroscopic analysis of low-mass stars. His career-defining contributions include co-founding the Anglo-Australian Planet Search and participating in the discovery of planets orbiting Proxima Centauri and Barnard's star. His work predominantly employs radial-velocity methods to study M dwarf systems and substellar objects.
Recent publications demonstrate concentrated focus on instrumental calibration techniques, ultracool binary characterization, and exoplanet mass determination in nearby stellar systems. His research bridges observational astronomy with cutting-edge instrumentation development.
He currently leads three major projects:
- "Extreme objects in the Local Bubble" (2024-2026)
- "Parallaxes of faint T and Y dwarfs" (2023-2027)
- "Blinded by the Light" (2023-2026)
Professor Jones co-developed the Liverpool Robotic Telescope and established the Bayfordbury Observatory at Hertfordshire. His leadership extends to chairing the inaugural European Week of Astronomy and Space Science and securing IoP accreditation for the university's Physics degree program.
