Hugh C. Hemmings Jr., M.D., Ph.D., holds the Joseph F. Artusio Jr. Professorship and serves as Chair of Anesthesiology, Professor of Pharmacology, and Senior Associate Dean for Research at Weill Cornell Medicine. He is also Anesthesiologist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. His career spans over 30 years at Weill Cornell, with roles including Director of Research (1995–1999), Vice Chair for Research (1999–2013), and Chair since 2013. Dr. Hemmings trained at Yale (BS, PhD, MD) and completed postdoctoral work at Rockefeller University and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.
His research focuses on synaptic mechanisms of general anesthetics, neuronal signaling, and their effects on neurotransmitter release. Supported by NIH grants, his work integrates pharmacology, electrophysiology, and imaging to study anesthetic actions at molecular and cellular levels. He leads the Hemmings and Platholi Labs, collaborating with teams investigating anesthetic impacts on synaptic plasticity, Alzheimer’s disease, and genetic variability.

Dr. Hemmings has published over 200 articles and edited four books, including Pharmacology & Physiology for Anesthesia. His honors include the Anesthesiology Young Investigator Award and election to the National Academy of Medicine.
