Hsun-Ta Hsu is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Social Work with a 25% secondary appointment in the School of Data Science and Society. He also serves as core faculty at the University of Southern California’s Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society. His research focuses on addressing societal disparities through AI applications, particularly examining homelessness, health promotion, firearm violence prevention, and housing policy. He has conducted multi-city studies analyzing health outcomes, substance use patterns, and social support mechanisms among marginalized youth.
Research interests include the intersection of technology, health equity, and urban marginalization. His work spans epidemiological analyses of HIV/STI testing patterns, predictive modeling of intimate partner violence, and evaluating housing interventions' effectiveness across racial/ethnic and LGBTQ+ subgroups. Recent studies explore digital communication's role in social support networks and firearm violence's lethal intersection with homelessness-related crises.
Key publications address regional disparities in healthcare access, the buffering effects of online health information seeking against discrimination, and voter engagement among unhoused young adults. His interdisciplinary approach combines machine learning with traditional social science methodologies to inform policy and intervention design.
