Howard Wiseman

Howard Wiseman is a Professor at Griffith University's School of Environment and Science (Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics). He has been affiliated with Griffith since 1999, serving as Director of the Centre for Quantum Dynamics until 2025 and currently leading the Queensland Quantum and Advanced Technologies Research Institute (QUATRI). His research focuses on quantum foundations, quantum measurements, and Arthurian studies.

Education:

• PhD in Physics from the University of Queensland (1992–1994)

Research Interests: Quantum information, quantum control, and Arthurian history/literature. He has authored over 240 peer-reviewed papers and co-authored the seminal textbook Quantum Measurement and Control.

Key Contributions: Pioneered work on quantum steering, Heisenberg-limited lasers, and foundational quantum experiments. His Arthurian studies include blending history with original fiction in Then Arthur Fought.

Grants & Awards:

• Recipient of the Boas Medal (2021), Malcolm McIntosh Medal (2003), and Pawsey Medal (2003)
• Fellowships from Optica, the American Physical Society, and the Australian Academy of Science
• Lead researcher on ARC-funded projects and international collaborations

Teaching & Supervision: Advised over 30 doctoral students, including work on quantum causal models, Heisenberg-limited lasers, and quantum state smoothing. Taught advanced courses in quantum mechanics and general relativity.

Labs & Collaborations: Founded the Centre for Quantum Dynamics and co-leads QUATRI, fostering quantum technologies and foundational research.
