Howard Jones

Howard Jones is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, part of the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with a fellowship term running from October 2009 to July 2026. His academic background in social anthropology and development economics informs his interdisciplinary research on financial systems, social stratification, and educational access in developing countries.

Dr. Jones' educational foundation combines social anthropology with development economics, enabling him to examine complex social and economic phenomena through multiple disciplinary lenses. His fieldwork has primarily focused on India, with additional research in Africa, examining how financial systems interact with social structures to shape development outcomes.

His research interests center on financial services for poverty reduction, informal finance mechanisms, social stratification and development, migration and remittances, and low-cost private schools in developing contexts. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in rural India, particularly in Rajasthan, examining moneylender finance, financial inclusion/exclusion dynamics, caste impacts on livelihood diversification, and the expansion of private education.
