Howard Giles is a Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland’s School of Psychology. His research focuses on intergenerational communication, aging, intergroup relations, and language dynamics across diverse cultural and social contexts. He holds a Ph.D. (1971) and D.Sc. (1996) in Social Psychology from the University of Bristol.
Dr. Giles’s work examines aging through a social identity lens, investigating how age-related stereotypes and communication patterns impact intergenerational interactions. His theories, such as Communication Accommodation Theory, have influenced studies on nonverbal communication, elder abuse prevention, and end-of-life communication. He has authored 30 books, 20 journal special issues, and hundreds of articles, earning awards like the ICA Career Productivity Award (2000).
