Howard Chiang is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, Davis, since 2017. His research focuses on modern China and Sinophone cultural studies, with emphases on science, medicine, gender, and sexuality. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Global Encyclopedia of LGBTQ History and a leading scholar in transgender and Sinophone studies. Key awards include the 2020 Dartmouth Medal and 2019 Humanities Book Prize. Affiliated with East Asian Studies, Science & Technology Studies, Cultural Studies, and Feminist Theory programs.
His work bridges historical analysis with queer theory, exploring topics like psychoanalysis, transcultural reasoning, and the legacies of Foucault. He co-edits the 'Global Queer Asias' book series and previously served as Founding Chair of the Society of Sinophone Studies. Education includes a PhD from Princeton University.
Publications span monographs (e.g., Transtopia in the Sinophone Pacific, After Eunuchs) and edited volumes. Teaching includes courses on Chinese history, science, and global sexualities. Grants from institutions like the Wellcome Trust and National Humanities Center support his research.
