Houston Robert is a Professor of Early Modern History at the University of St Andrews. He holds a First Class Honours MA in Modern History from St Andrews (1977) and a PhD from Cambridge University (1981). His academic career includes roles as Lecturer (1983–1993), Reader (1993–1995), and Professor (1995–present) at St Andrews. He has held visiting positions at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Yale University, and the Huntington Library.
Research focuses on social, economic, and cultural history of Britain and Europe (c.1500–1850), including literacy, population trends, and the history of psychiatry. Notable works include Social Change in the Age of Enlightenment: Edinburgh, 1660–1760 (1994) and studies on civic Calvinism in Rotterdam.
