Hossein Esmaeili is an Associate Professor at Flinders University's College of Business, Government and Law, and holds affiliations with the Centre for Social Impact and Jeff Bleich Centre for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies. He specializes in international law, comparative law (particularly Middle Eastern systems), property law, and law of the sea, with a focus on social justice in migrant communities. He coordinates the Master of Laws (International Law and International Relations) and previously served as Associate Dean (2015-2018).
Dr. Esmaeili holds a PhD from UNSW, alongside masters in Criminal Law and Criminology, and LL.M. His research explores interdisciplinary collaboration in areas like offshore energy law, CALD communities, and Australia's MENA relations. Notable projects include an independent review of Australia's paid family/domestic violence leave entitlements and a cross-border investment study in Islamic-Arab contexts.
His editorial roles include the LexisNexis Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedent, Flinders Law Journal, and Manchester Journal of Transnational Islamic Law & Practice. He contributes to global initiatives like the International Law Association's Islamic Law committee and Japan's International Education for Sustainable Development Alliance.
Supervising over 20 postgraduate students, his advisement includes seminal works on family violence in Afghan communities and migration law reforms. His work impacts policy globally, cited by Australian courts, UN agencies, and U.S. Congress.
