Dr. Hope Harvey is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Sociology at the University of Kentucky's Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, with additional affiliation at the Center for Poverty Research. Her research examines housing instability, family complexity, and poverty, particularly focusing on doubled-up households where multiple families share living spaces. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Policy and Sociology from Harvard University, an M.P.A. from University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. from Carleton College.
Harvey employs mixed methods to study how economic constraints and family relationships shape residential decisions. Her book Complex Households: How Doubling Up Shapes Family Life (forthcoming 2025) synthesizes this work. She has received SSSP paper awards for research on maternal experiences in shared housing and poverty dynamics. Current projects investigate housing cost burdens among older adults and local variations in disability benefits.
Research Publications Analysis: Harvey's 15 most recent articles demonstrate consistent focus on housing precarity across the life course. Quantitative analyses reveal patterns in doubled-up household formation, while qualitative work illuminates negotiation dynamics within shared living arrangements. Temporal trends show increasing attention to policy implications, particularly regarding social safety nets for vulnerable populations.
