Dr Hongzhi Zhang is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Culture & Society at Monash University. His scholarship sits at the intersection of cultural studies, curriculum studies, and education policy, with a focus on centering Asian epistemologies through the Asia as Method framework. He co-edited the landmark book Asia as Method in Education Studies (2015) and authored the 2023 book Equity Issues in Chinese Higher Education Policy, both published by Routledge.
- Leads the ACCEPT Project (2023-present): Bridges academic research, school education, and community engagement to support the Australian Curriculum's 'Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia' priority
- Teaches units including Education and globalisation in the Asian century and Indigenous perspectives and learning
- Contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG4: Quality Education)
His research critically examines educational equity, cultural pluralism, and policy impacts on inclusion, particularly in Asian contexts. Recent work explores the paradoxes of China's higher education expansion and the development of culturally responsive pedagogies through community partnerships.
The ACCEPT Project has delivered innovative educational resources by collaborating with local councils, museums, and schools to integrate Asian Australian histories into classrooms. His recent publications analyze student wellbeing in secondary education, cross-cultural autoethnographic approaches to academic success, and strategies for community resource integration in curriculum design.
