His research focuses on statistical method development for genomics data analysis, including genome-wide association studies, single-cell RNAseq, network modeling, and genetic risk prediction. He applies these methods to major disease areas like cancer, PTSD, neuroscience, and precision medicine.
His recent publications demonstrate methodological advances in spatial transcriptomics and foundation models for multi-omics integration. He has received multiple honors including the Mortimer Spiegelman Award and Pao-Lu Hsu Award, with fellowship in AAAS, ASA, and IMS.
Dr. Zhao has trained over 110 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom hold tenured positions at leading institutions. His lab develops open-source software and contributes to major consortia like the Million Veteran Program and Connecticut Academy of Science & Engineering.
