Professor Hongtao Ding is a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Iowa's College of Engineering since 2012, and concurrently serves as a Researcher at the Iowa Technology Institute. His expertise lies in advanced manufacturing processes, laser materials processing, metal additive manufacturing, and surface engineering. He holds a PhD from Purdue University and has contributed to over 150 publications. His research focuses on optimizing manufacturing technologies through laser, ultrasonic, and friction stir methods, with applications in superhydrophobic surfaces, data-driven modeling, and sustainable materials. The Laser Materials Processing Lab under his leadership explores innovations in laser-based surface functionalization and additive manufacturing.
