Hongjian Wang serves as an Associate Professor at Purdue University with cross-appointments in the School of Languages and Cultures (Chinese, Comparative Literature, and Asian Studies programs) and the Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance (Film and Video Production). Her office is located in SC G022, and she may be contacted at wang2512@purdue.edu.
She earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Riverside in 2012, establishing her foundation in literary and cultural analysis.
Wang's research examines modern and contemporary Chinese literature, film, performing arts, and cultural history through the lens of state-elite-populace dynamics. Her monograph Decadence in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture (2020) reinterprets twentieth-century Chinese literary works using European Decadence theory, while her current project The Laughter of the Others analyzes satiric CCTV Spring Festival Gala skits to illuminate postsocialist Chinese societal shifts. Her methodological approach integrates comparative literary analysis with cultural historiography.
Recent publications reveal consistent thematic focus on Chinese cultural representation across media forms. Key trends include critical examinations of satire in state-controlled television, experimental theatrical practices, transnational film reception, and visual constructions of identity. These works collectively map evolving cultural politics in contemporary China through close analysis of performance, media, and visual texts.
