Professor Hong Woo-young is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Defense Systems Engineering at Sejong University's College of Engineering. He also holds a position in the Department of Marine Systems Convergence Engineering and serves as Professor Emeritus at the Naval Academy. Currently (as of 2025), he holds the position of Special Vice President at Sejong University and directs the Defense Weapons Systems Research Institute. His academic career spans from his early days as a Professor at the Naval Academy (1985-2013), where he retired as a Navy captain, to his current roles at Sejong University.
Professor Hong's research focuses on underwater acoustic signal processing, sonar systems, and target detection and identification. His work integrates advanced signal processing techniques with machine learning approaches to solve complex problems in naval defense systems. He has made significant contributions to compressive sensing applications in underwater acoustics, active and passive sonar target classification, and underwater weapon system effectiveness analysis. His laboratory, the Underwater Acoustic Signal Processing Lab, serves as a hub for innovative research in naval defense technologies.
His publication record shows a strong trend toward integrating deep learning and neural network approaches with traditional signal processing methods for underwater target detection and classification. Recent work emphasizes data augmentation techniques, attention mechanisms, and feature fusion methods to improve sonar system performance, particularly with limited training data. His research bridges theoretical signal processing with practical naval defense applications.
