Hong Tang is the Llewellyn West Jones, Jr. Professor of Engineering at Yale University, affiliated with the Departments of Electrical Engineering, Physics, and Applied Physics. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology (2002). His research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics and quantum physics, with emphasis on quantum transduction between microwave and optical photons, superconducting quantum detectors, and optomechanical systems. His work explores nonlinear optics, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), and integrated photonic circuits.
Key research projects include developing quantum networks for secure communication, creating high-speed single-photon detectors with near-unity efficiency, and studying Casimir forces and surface potentials in nanomembranes. Tang’s lab has pioneered advancements in dynamic manipulation of nanomechanical resonators and non-volatile mechanical memory.
- Research Highlights:
- Quantum transducers for photon frequency conversion
- Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs)
- Optical force manipulation in integrated photonic circuits
Honors include the Packard Fellowship (2009), NSF Career Award (2009), and election to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. Tang’s group includes postdoctoral researchers and Ph.D. students working across disciplines such as quantum optics, nanotechnology, and materials science. The lab collaborates on projects ranging from ferroelectric nitride materials to cryogenic photon-counting systems.
Current students include Yu Guo (Nanjing U.), Fengyan Yang (Nankai U.), and others specializing in photonics and quantum engineering. Tang’s work bridges fundamental physics with applied technologies, addressing challenges in quantum computing, sensing, and communication.
