Hong Liu is a Commonwealth Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's College of Engineering. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering (1990) and has been actively involved in teaching and research.

His research focuses on network security, heterogeneous networks, real-time quality-of-service management, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), and programming languages. He has contributed to cybersecurity education through courses like Network Security (ECE 549), which includes hands-on experimentation via an Internet Testbed.
Recent recognition includes being named the Leo M. Sullivan Teacher of the Year in December 2023. He teaches courses ranging from undergraduate operating systems (ECE 565) to pre-dissertation research (ECE 603) and doctoral dissertation research (ECE 701).
