Holly Watkins is the Minehan Family Professor of Musicology at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. Her academic career combines deep expertise in Romantic and modernist aesthetics with innovative interdisciplinary approaches to music's relationship with philosophy, ecology, and animal studies. She holds a PhD from UC Berkeley (2004), following MA (musicology) and BA (physics) degrees from the University of Virginia.
Watkins' research spans German musical thought from E.T.A. Hoffmann to Schoenberg, intersections between music and environmentalism, and critiques of disembodied musicological practices. Her landmark books include *Musical Vitalities: Ventures in a Biotic Aesthetic of Music* (2018) and *Metaphors of Depth in German Musical Thought* (2011). She has held prestigious fellowships including the ACLS and Harrington Faculty Fellowship, and her work has been supported by multiple grants from leading institutions.
Teaching and collaborative projects include affiliations with Eastman's Theory department. Beyond academia, her passions include gardening and hiking, reflecting her ecological research interests. Earlier career highlights include quantum theory studies and performing as lead guitarist in a grunge-funk trio.
