Holly Shiels is a Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on Integrative and Environmental Physiology, exploring how environmental changes impact cardiac function across species. She has held academic positions since 2004, progressing from Lecturer to Professor. Shiels is an Honorary President of the Fisheries Society of the British Isles and serves as a Fellow of The Physiological Society and Royal Society of Biology. Her work addresses pollution, thermal biology, and cardiovascular health in animals and humans, with implications for UN Sustainable Development Goals. She has received awards including the 2016 Making a Difference Award and Teaching Excellence Award. Her research spans over 146 publications, with recent studies on microplastic bioaccumulation in sea turtles and cardiac effects of environmental pollutants. She leads projects funded by the British Heart Foundation and collaborates internationally on environmental and health impacts of pollution.
