Holly Brophy-Herb is a Professor of Child Development in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Michigan State University (MSU), part of the College of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on emotion socialization in infants and toddlers, particularly within parent-child and educator-child relationships. She directs the Building Early Emotion Skills (BEES) Lab, which emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration to address early childhood development challenges. Brophy-Herb holds a PhD and MA in Child Development and Child and Family Studies from Syracuse University.
Her research interests include parenting practices, self-regulation, infant mental health, reflective functioning, obesity risk, and early intervention strategies. She has led studies on the Michigan Model of Infant Mental Health Home Visiting, which improves maternal caregiving and reduces emergency service reliance. Her work often addresses low-income families and emphasizes community partnerships to enhance child well-being.
Brophy-Herb’s recent articles highlight interventions targeting teacher well-being, mindfulness in education, and obesity prevention through programs like the Simply Dinner Study. She is an Infant Mental Health Mentor and actively mentors graduate students in child development. Her research bridges academic and applied settings, focusing on equity and policy implications for early childhood systems.
Key collaborations include the Youth Equity Project and the Child Development Lab, which aim to improve early childhood outcomes through evidence-based practices.
