Holly Brewer is the Burke Professor of American Cultural and Intellectual History and Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland’s College of Arts and Humanities. She also serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies. Her research focuses on early American history, the British Empire, slavery, and legal and political philosophy.

Her acclaimed book By Birth or Consent explores the evolution of authority through debates on consent in legal and political thought. Her current book project, Slavery & Sovereignty in Early America and the British Empire, builds on her 2017 American Historical Review article and a 2018 AEON essay. She has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (2014) and multiple prizes, including the Order of the Coif’s Biennial Book Prize and the Srinivas Aravamudan Prize.
