Holly Barnard is a Professor of Geography and Associate Dean of Research at the University of Colorado Boulder's College of Arts and Sciences. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) and Co-Director of the Hydrologic Sciences Graduate Program. Her research focuses on ecohydrology, stable isotope geochemistry, and forest hydrology, bridging hydrology and ecosystem science to understand climate and land-use impacts on water resources and ecosystems. She holds a PhD from Oregon State University (2009), MS from Colorado State University (2000), and BS from the University of Washington (1998).
Dr. Barnard has received numerous awards, including the 2021 Boulder Faculty Excellence in Leadership and Service Award and the 2012 EPA Scientific and Technological Achievement Award. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, with over 50 co-authored publications in journals like Communications Earth & Environment and Water Resources Research. She advises graduate students in the Barnard Ecohydrology Lab and teaches courses such as Research Design in Geography and Introduction to Hydrology.
Her research uses field experimentation, isotopic analysis, and remote sensing to study water flow dynamics in mountainous areas. Current projects include investigating groundwater contributions to streamflow, dissolved carbon dynamics, and the impacts of disturbance (e.g., wildfires) on critical zone processes. She collaborates with federal agencies and international institutions to advance sustainable water management strategies.
