Holly A. Russell, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and the Center for Community Health and Prevention at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She directs the Addiction Medicine program at Highland Family Medicine and serves as Medical Director of Clinical and Community Programs at the Center for Community Health and Prevention. Her work focuses on addiction medicine, healthcare disparities, and improving access to medications for opioid use disorder. Dr. Russell completed her M.D. at the University of Rochester (2007) and a faculty development fellowship with a Master's in Clinical Investigation (2010).
Dr. Russell’s research addresses substance use recovery, vaccine hesitancy, and gender bias in medicine. She has pioneered programs integrating behavioral and medical care, including a self-determination-based intervention to reduce cardiovascular risks. Her awards include the Susan B. Anthony Emerging Leader Award (2020) and the Health Care Crisis Prize (2019).
Her publications span opioid treatment outcomes, stigma reduction in recovery, and strategies to combat vaccine hesitancy in rural communities. She actively advocates for healthcare equity and has developed training modules to address sexual harassment in academic medicine.
