Prof. Holger Waalkens is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Groningen, within the Bernoulli Institute. His research focuses on dynamical systems theory and semiclassical quantum mechanics, with applications in atomic physics, celestial mechanics, and optics. He holds leadership roles in the Dynamical Systems, Geometry & Mathematical Physics group, Board of Examiners, and Curriculum Committee for Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.
Education: B.Sc. (1996) and Ph.D. (1999) in Physics from Universities of Oldenburg and Bremen, followed by postdoc positions at Bristol University and MSRI (Berkeley).
Research emphasizes Hamiltonian systems and their geometric structures, transition state theory, monodromy in integrable systems, and microlaser dynamics. Collaborations include leading institutions globally. He organized conferences such as the 2018 Telluride workshop on chemical reaction dynamics and the 2019 Equadiff minisymposium.
Advising over a dozen PhD students and leading teams in funded projects (e.g., NWO grants). His work bridges mathematics, physics, and engineering, with contributions to both theoretical insights and applied technologies.
