Hogan Seidel is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Communications at Simmons University. Based in Boston, their creative work intersects eco-praxis, identity, and liberation, focusing on experimental moving image and analog photographic processes using formats like Super 8, 16mm, and 35mm film, as well as medium and large format photography. Techniques employed include photochemical abstraction, botanical collage, cyanotype, optical printing, found footage, and in-camera editing.
Education:
- BFA in Media Art from Emerson College
- MFA in Media Art from Emerson College
- M.Ed in Arts Education from Harvard University
Research interests include developing eco-conscious black-and-white photographic developers from locally foraged and invasive plant materials. They experiment with non-toxic, sustainable alternatives to traditional darkroom chemistry, exploring tonal possibilities while emphasizing environmental ethics and place-based practice. Their teaching covers Latin American and African Diaspora history courses and graduate-level feminist methodologies and public history.
Other roles and affiliations: Co-editor of Analog Cookbook (UNC Press), a biannual publication on analog filmmaking and photography. Current studio resident at the Boston Center for the Arts until 2028, with past residencies at MASS MoCA, Vermont Studio Center, and Walkaway House. Their creative research is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, United States Artists, and Collective Futures Fund.
