Dr. Hoeke Baarsma is a Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on Molecular Pharmacology with an emphasis on respiratory system mechanisms, chronic diseases, and aging. He investigates the role of Wnt signaling pathways in lung physiology and pathology, particularly in conditions like COPD and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His work also explores the effects of air pollutants and inflammatory responses in pulmonary systems. Baarsma has contributed to studies on drug repurposing (e.g., amlexanox) and in vitro models (e.g., 3D spheroids) for lung pathology research. He is actively involved in educational committees and program leadership in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science.
Research Interests: Molecular Pharmacology, Respiratory System Biology, Wnt Signaling Pathways, Chronic Lung Diseases, Air Pollution Effects, and Drug Development. His publications span over 36 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on mechanisms of lung inflammation, fibrosis, and regeneration. Baarsma holds ancillary roles as owner of H.A.Baarsma Beheer BV, complementing his academic activities.
