Hoa Le Minh is a Professor in Optical Communications and Deputy Head of the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Electrical Engineering at Northumbria University's School of Engineering Physics and Mathematics. He leads active research in optical wireless systems and currently accepts PhD students, with prior roles at University of Oxford, Siemens AG, and Ho Chi Minh University of Technology.
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in Communication Studies (awarded 2004)
- PGCert (awarded 2013)
Professor Le Minh specializes in photonics, visible light communications (VLC), and intelligent networks, with expertise spanning signal processing, smartphone technology, and optical wireless security. His work bridges theoretical innovation in modulation techniques with practical applications like healthcare monitoring and LiFi deployment.
Current research emphasizes security integration in VLC systems (including quantum-inspired methods), energy-efficient antenna design, and standard-compliant commercial solutions. Recent outputs show strong focus on physical layer security, positioning accuracy, and cross-disciplinary health applications.
He actively secures major grants from EPSRC, Innovate UK, EU programs, and industry partners, currently leading the £1.2M 'Northumbria University-Integrated System Technologies' project (2021-2024) developing deployable communication systems.
Professor Le Minh supervises postgraduate researchers with 8 completed supervisee projects to date. He serves on EPSRC ICT grant panels, acts as associate editor for peer-reviewed journals, and previously chaired the IEEE Communications Society UK/Ireland Chapter.
